I use Gentoo Linux on both my desktop and my safe-to-drop-while-clunking-around-town laptop. Any form of Linux is highly recommended for extending the usable life of old hardware! If you want to get together sometime and do a Linux install, let me know, I’ll be glad to help. It’s nowhere near as hard as people make it out to be. I do have a pirated copy of WinXP around but we’d have to generate new keys for it and then hack the registry and it’s more work than I think Windows is worth 🙂

If you do get that desktop functional in Linux, you could buy an el cheepo huge IDE hard drive, stick it in, and mount everything from your laptop through NFS or samba to that drive. Then you could regularly back up the drive onto an external.

An old boyfriend of mine once insisted that the rule for data a person really cared about was copies on two hard drives and three removable media. But, then, he was a little obsessive…

Glad you got some of your data back!
